SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT- D. THOMPSON
Retire canine Fino from duty and provide handler first opportunity to purchase canine at a cost of one dollar ($1.00) pursuant to Deputy Sheriff's Memorandum of Understanding Article XV (B)(c).
SBC FILE NUMBER: 110
AGENDA SECTION:
CONSENT AGENDA
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
It has been the Department's practice to retire canines to their handlers when they reach an age or condition where they can no longer be of service. There is a need to retire one (1) of the Sheriff's current canines.
Canine Fino is a 7 year-old Dutch Shepherd that began service with the Sheriff's Office in August 2018. Due to Fino's age and the amount of re- retraining it would take to implement the Attorney General's reform on canine use of "find and bite" techniques to "find and bark", it has been determined that he is no longer able to work in a patrol canine capacity.
The Sheriff's Office desires to retire canine Fino from law enforcement service and offer the opportunity to purchase the canine at a cost of one dollar ($1.00) to his handler pursuant to Article XV(B)(c) of the Deputy Sheriff's Memorandum of Understanding. This request is made so that Fino may live out his remaining years with someone who has and will now continue to care for him.
