AGENDA SECTION:

CONSENT AGENDA

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) wishes to award a grant to County of San Benito to perform invasive weed control and eradication activities.  : The San Benito County Agricultural Commissioner will use funds to target treatment of purple starthistle (PST) in key areas that threaten agriculture and sensitive species such as the California red-legged frog (CRLF), and the California tiger salamander, both of which are listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.  Other noxious weed identified during the survey and treatment may also be targeted for control.

Two distinct populations of PST occur in San Benito county agricultural lands: San Juan Canyon (75 acres), and Tres Pinos Creek (Scattered individuals along a 4 mile stretch of creek).   This project will use an integrated pest management approach, combining herbicide for areas proposed for initial treatment and hand removal in sites where initial treatment has been completed and follow-up treatment is required.   The San Benito County Agricultural Commissioner’s office will be the lead on this project as a whole but will work closely with the county and private ranchers to implement this project.

The Grant Agreement contains two “Term” dates.  The Agreement Term Date is an internal CDFA Term Date.  The Project Term Date is the county’s Agreement Term Date, which will expire December 31, 2020.  If necessary, the Project Term Date can be extended within the Agreement Term Date ending December 31, 2021.

The anticipated revenue has been budgeted in the Agricultural Commissioner's Budget for FY2020/2021.
