AGENDA SECTION:

CONSENT AGENDA

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:

The MHSA emphasizes Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) as a key strategy in transforming California’s mental health system. PEI programs are required to include outreach to people who have the potential to recognize early signs of severe and potentially disabling mental illness. PEI programs also provide education focused on reduction of stigma and discrimination against people with mental illness and  promote methods to facilitate access and linkage to necessary care provided through mental health treatment at the earliest possible onset of mental illness. Suicide Prevention of the Central Coast through this MHSA funded contract will offer trainings focused on teaching the recognition of the early warning signs of suicidal behavior, techniques to improve response to situations involving suicide threat, methods for safe intervention and facilitation of timely linkage and access to intervention and support resources. The Behavioral Health Department recommends authorization to renew the contract with Suicide Prevention Services to deliver this component of the San Benito County MHSA Prevention and Early Intervention Plan.
