Presentations and Recognitions
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
Graniterock/Pavex
In July 1998, District 2 Supervisor, Richard Place, put into motion the process of abandoning the Old State Road outside of San Juan Bautista, in order to turn it from a source of law enforcement problems into the "first public private partnership parks project in the County of San Benito", later named the Anza Trail.
Graniterock/Pavex took on a ten year commitment to re-grade and maintain the Old Stage Road as a recreational trail, investing an initial $50,000 to bring the trail into use able condition. Granitrerock thus becoming the Official Parent of the project, committed to an additional ten years, saving the County an estimated $12,000 to $15,000 per year in road maintenance, and has again in 2018 committed time and treasure to the Anza Trail road maintenance.
Don Chapin Company
In 2006 the San Benito County Recreation Trail or "Natoinal Historic Trail" was ren-named Anza Trail after the historic Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition of 1775-76, from Mexico to San Francisco in what was then the northernmost colony in Spain's Alta California. District 2 Supervisor, Ruth Kessler, commissioned the existing wooden sign from Eclipse Art/Valerie Egland for the trail-head and installed a bench in honor of her late husband.
The Don Chapin Company volunteered the comfort station on the Trail as a public service to the County/Community. Don Chapin has been faithful in taking care of the portable rest room on the Anza Trail, coordinating with Tom's Tank Plumbing Service. In 2018 the Chapin Company has re-committed to stewardship of this public service.
Recology San Benito County
Thirty years after the conversion of the Old Stage Road to a San Benito County Parks Trail, the trail head has been receiving some attention as truly a wellness opportunity for the County/Community.
There had become a problem of trash disposal and pet cleanup. R.E.A.C.H. San Benito Parks Foundation members inquired with Supervisor Botelho as to the possibility of some kind of trash collection at the trail head.
Approaching General Manager, Phil Couchee, an excellent resolution to the problem was established. A Route Manager was sent to survey the situation, and within two weeks, two perfectly adapted bins were placed uphill from the restroom to be services weekly.
