BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
On May 20, 2014 your Board approved a five year agreement with the County of Los Angeles to provide statewide transportation of inmates transferring to and from other facilities to the San Benito County Jail. The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's transportation division schedules weekly trips throughout the state of California and has proven to be a reliable and cost effective alternative to long haul transportation of inmates. The current Agreement is due to expire June 30, 2019.
Section 7.3 of the Agreement includes an annual rate adjustment provision effective July 1 of each year. This amendment before you today decreases the cost per prisoner, per mile to $0.91 from $0.92. The annual cost per meal remains the same at $8. If significant deputy sheriff time is spent by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department personnel booking or picking up County of San Benito inmates, the hourly rate will increase to $79.21 per service hour from $73.10.
Since the commencement of the Agreement on July 1, 2014 the following has been paid to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for this service:
FY 2014-15: $ 241.20
FY 2015-16: $ 543.40
FY 2016-17: $ 0.00
FY 2017-18: $ 966.00
The above total cost of $1,750.60 covered 2,125 transportation miles. The cost to the County if this service was not provided would have been approximately $8,500.
