BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
In July 2013, the County entered into a five (5) year agreement with Santa Clara County for pathology services. The agreement is due to expire June 30, 2018. Santa Clara County and the Sheriff's Office desire to renew this agreement for an additional 5 years.
Fees for general services will remain unchanged for FY 2018-19. The full autopsy cost is $2,000 and $1,000 for external examinations. Autopsies performed on babies or homicide victims remains unchanged at $2,500. The hourly rate for the Forensic Pathologist responding to an investigative crime scene increased by $2.54 to $175 per hour from $172.46. It should be noted that the Sheriff's Office has not had a case where the Forensic Pathologist was needed to respond to aid in the determination of cause and manner of death.
Toxicology and x-ray services are an additional cost associated with patholgy services regardless of whether it is a full autopsy or external examination. These average cost for these services is $165; however based on the cause of death, these services can range from $165 to $2,500.
To date, forty-five (45) examinations have been performed by Santa Clara County in FY 2017-18. Of these, twenty-one (21) were autopsies, twenty-two (22) were external examinations and two (2) were homicide examinations for a total cost of $46,500. The total toxicology cost to date is $20,775.50.
