Approve Agreement between San Benito County Probation Department (Probation) and ZUSTAN K-9 SERVICES LLC (ZUSTAN) for the initial training program and acquisition of one (1) certified service canine at a cost of $3,501, plus two (2) years of monthly maintenance training at a cost of $250 monthly ($6,000 total), for a total cost of $9,501, and to authorize the Chief Probation Officer to sign the agreement and accept the certified service canine for and on behalf of the Probation Department.

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
ZUSTAN K-9 SERVICES LLC (ZUSTAN) shall provide a four (4) week Basic Handler's Class which consists of real life training scenarios that law enforcement agencies face in everyday situations. They expose the K-9 team to day/night training, vehicles, inside, outside, obedience training, different surfaces and anything that will challenge them to perform at their best. So when the K-9 team is called to work they have already faced a similar situation in training. ZUSTAN will provide the K-9 team with instruction, not limited to: obedience, control of canine, narcotic detection, and industry standards; as well as; California POST K-9 Standards Certification by the end of this four (4) week initial training program.
ZUSTAN and Probation agree that ZUSTAN will provide one (1) trained /certified service canine (narcotic detection) named "Remy," which is a 19 month old male Dutch Shepherd Dog. The cost of the canine will be $1 and the four (4) week Basic Handler's Class will be $3,500 totaling $3,501.
Both parties agree that 16 hours of monthly maintenance training will be conducted by ZUSTAN for $250.00 a month for two (2) years at a total cost of $6,000.
UNET (the UNET Council) agrees to support the K9 Program for Probation (includes monthly maintenance training). The funding from AB109 which supports the Deputy Probation Officer assigned to UNET will cover the additional employee costs. There will be no general fund costs to the County.
