AGENDA SECTION:
CONSENT AGENDA
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
Ambulance transportation in a timely manner has in recent years created difficulty in the ability to transfer clients to often hard to find available psychiatric hospital beds required by clients with acute psychiatric treatment needs. This issue can create unnecessary delays and extended stays in the Hazel Hawkins Hospital’s Emergency Department (HHH) and sometimes even the loss of the psychiatric bed availability due to inability to guarantee timely patient arrival and admission at the receiving facility. Ambulance level of medical support is also unnecessarily costly, as clients being transported have already been deemed medically stable for transfer to a psychiatric facility by HHH and only require a means of safe transport to the receiving facility which can be provided by non-ambulance level of transportation.
Marquee Medical Transport is the only non-ambulance medical transport provider that is also a local business, family owned and based in San Juan Bautista. This provider is also agreeable to a contractually defined guaranteed timely response time and at a reasonable cost.
It is in the best interest of the clients that County Behavioral Health serves and in the spirit of cooperative efforts with HHH, who also share the burden of serving the same clients, that County Behavioral Health insure timely, fiscally prudent solutions to the issue of client transports from HHH to receiving Psychiatric inpatient facilities.
